Recoding

 

 

1. Uss SPSS to recode the variable age in the GSS93subset dataset into three categories. Use the following coding.

           

            18-35

            36-45

            Older than 45

 

a) Run a frequency distribution on age

b) Do recode and add labels to new values on recoded variable

            c) Run a frequency distribution on the recoded variable

            d) Copy and paste the frequency distribution table for the recoded variable into a Word file. Do not include any wrong or unnecessary information. You should check this table with the frequncy distribution table that you produced for the original variable to see if you recoded the variable correctly. (For example, check the number of missing cases.) But, do not include the table for the original variable in the Word file.)

 

 

 

2. Recode the variable partyid in the GSS93subset dataset into three categories (Republican, Independent, Democrat). Run a frequency distribution on the recoded variable and copy and paste the frequancy distribution table into a Word file. Make sure to follow the guidelines below:

 

                        Combine “Strong Democrat”, “Not Str Democrat”, and “Ind, near Demo”

                        Combine “Independent”

                        Combine “Strong Republican”, “Not Str Republican”, and “Ind, near Rep”

                        Treat the rest as system-missing

. Recode the variable vote92 into two categories (Voted, Did not vote). Make sure to drop other categories, including "NAP", "Not eligible", and "Refused." Run a frequency distribution on the recoded variable and copy and paste the frequancy distribution table into a Word file.
