SPSS: Recoding

 

 

1. Recode the variable age in the GSS2012subset dataset into the following three categories. Follow a) through d) below to complete the recoding.

           

            18-35

            36-45

            Older than 45

 

Hint: Make sure to check the highest value. Do not forget to deal with the missing cases.

 

a) Run a frequency distribution (SPSS: Analyze--Descriptive--Frequency) on age and check the lowest and the highest values.

b) Do recode and add labels to new values on the recoded variable

c) Run a frequency distribution on the recoded variable and compare the results with the frequency distribution table of the original age variable and check if the recoding is done correctly.

            d) Copy and paste the frequency distribution table for the recoded variable into a Word file. (Try to paste as an object, so that the format of the table is maintained.)

  

2.  (*Click "Reset" before you begin new recoding. ) Recode the variable partyid in the GSS2012 dataset into three categories (Republican, Independent, Democrat). Run a frequency distribution on the recoded variable and attach the SPSS output. Make sure to follow the guidelines below:

 

                        Combine “Strong Democrat”, “Not Str Democrat”, and “Ind, near Demo”

                        Combine “Independent”

                        Combine “Strong Republican”, “Not Str Republican”, and “Ind, near Rep”

                        Treat the rest as system-missing

 

a) Check the coding of the original variable. (Go to the "Variable View" page and find out how the categories are coded by clicking the "Value" column.)

b) Run a frequency distribution on the original variable.

c) Do recode and add labels to new values on recoded variable

            d) Run a frequency distribution on the recoded variable

            e) Copy and paste the frequency distribution table for the recoded variable. (Try to paste as an object, so that the format of the table is maintained.)

 

Points will be deducted for any wrong or redundant tables.

 

If you make any mistakes, the instructor will let you know how to improve your assignment. You can redo your assignment and show the instructor the improved version. Repeat the process until everything is correctly done. Save your file and deposit the final version to Blackboard. Visit www.bsu.edu/blackboard  and go to POLS210. Find Assignment 4 and double click and upload your file as a WORD file. You will receive 100%. Blackboard allows you to deposit only once. If you did not complete the assignment during the lab hours, you must deposit your assignment to Blackboard by 5pm next day. The instructor will grade your assignment after you submit it in Blackboard. Please do not email the assignment. (You will not be able to redo the assignment, even though your score is lower than 100%.)
